Style Primer: Control

October 19th, 2011 // 7:00 am @

In part two of our four-part blog series overviewing Individual Styles, we offer for introduction the Control.

Part 1: Power
Part 2: Control

What those around her or him might view as “curt,” the Control sees as progress. Being direct is a clear trait of how this Style gets things done. They simply like results are not always concerned with how others feel in the process of getting to them. That’s not to say they will not reward those around them when things get accomplished; in fact, the Control can be known for spreading the share of an accomplishment, provided it gets done.

When working with a Control, be on your toes for quick decisions, knowing that if they’re leading the meeting, it’s going to be short and you’re going to leave with tasks. Once in the midst of their project, provide them updates and never let them be surprised by a breakdown. You have to stay on your toes with a Control or they will make decisions right around you. Don’t challenge the Control either, as criticism doesn’t sit well with them. However, it may not be because of ego, but because they don’t have time for it. If you’re going to interact with them, make it is about the intent of the conversation and don’t veer into “what he or she said” or what your dog did this morning.

Moreover, remember that at the pace a Control makes decisions, any bad ones will quickly be replaced with the solution.

The Control is disciplined and decisive, so you may find them in operating rooms (look for the person with the scalpel in thier hands), behind the office door with CEO emblazoned on it and at the conference table as a consultant, leading your company in a new direction.
